Volunteering
Representing the Prairie States Mushroom Club
As a volunteer, you represent the Prairie States Mushroom Club (PSMC) and its mission to share knowledge and appreciation of fungi with the public. When participating in club events or communicating on behalf of PSMC (in person or online), please:
Strive to embody our values of curiosity, respect, and inclusivity.
Present information as accurately as you can, acknowledge when you are uncertain, and seek help from other volunteers to provide accurate information when needed.
Refrain from engaging in arguments or political discussions while representing the club. You are never obligated to interact with unpleasant people.
Seek guidance from a PSMC board member if unsure how to respond to a question or situation involving club policy or scientific information.
What We Do
The Prairie States Mushroom Club is entirely supported by volunteers, membership fees, and donations. Behind the scenes, PSMC leadership coordinates all the day-to-day functions of the club, such as:
Scheduling events and forays
Responding to ID requests
Leading and co-leading
Writing blog posts and newsletter articles
Inventing new ways to educate!
Equity, Access, and Non-Discrimination
We value equity and access to the outdoors and to information about the natural world. The Prairie States Mushroom Club welcomes members and participants of all backgrounds and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, or socioeconomic status.
We are committed to creating an environment that is welcoming and safe for everyone, including those who are new to foraging or science. Disrespectful or exclusionary behavior, including harassment or discrimination of any kind, is not tolerated in club spaces, events, or communications.
